In 2015, we discovered that one of the most biodiverse areas, the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, was facing a significant environmental challenge: vast areas of medium semi-evergreen forest and seasonally flooded lowland forest had been deforested for cattle ranching and forestry exploitation. In response, we set out to restore biological interactions, ecological processes, and biogeochemical cycles by rehabilitating the affected areas. Today, a dedicated team of 36 people at Plant-for-the-Planet A.C. is working to restore these ecosystems, planting up to 9,000 trees in a single day. We focus on 17 native tree species from the Yucatan Peninsula, ensuring they are given the conditions to adapt successfully to their new environment. Plant-for-the-Planet doesn’t work alone. We collaborate with local farmers, government agencies such as the Ministry of Environment, Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Energy of the state of Campeche, as well as initiatives like “Production for Wellbeing” and “Sowing Life” in the states of Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo. These programs aim to combine the conservation of natural resources with their sustainable use. Our actions are part of a larger goal: to plant 100 million trees by 2030.
